apr 13, 2018 - Voyage to the River

Description:

Siddhartha leaves the village after having sex with Kamala, as he depression enhances quickly. He deals with his depression by beginning to gamble and drink often. This continues to make him feel hopeless as he then decides to leave the village and see if something out there will make him better and happier. On his journey, Siddhartha nearly hits rock bottom as he considers killing himself repeatedly until the sound of "Om" form the river stops him in his tracks. After being so exhausted from his long journey from the village to the river, Siddhartha collapses and passes out and is left alone laying asleep by the river. Govinda then finds him to wake him up and tells him he is a spiritual pilgrim. Starving, Siddhartha then motivates himself to go find food which he then runs into the ferryman, as they then go out to eat.

Character Relationships: Siddhartha has trouble finding someone to pull him out of his depression after he has sex with Kamala and sets off. Having no one to go to, he purs all of his depression into gambling and heavy drinking, which only makes the situation worse. Siddhartha continues to be alone until Govinda wakes him up from the river bank and he runs into the ferryman while searching for something to eat.

Themes, Symbols, and Motifs: A symbol in this section of the book could potentially be he empty his stomach is and how it could represent how empty he is emotionally after learning the art of love and how it suddenly made him shut down emotionally. This is an interesting point, and certainly could've been used as a way for the author how depressed Siddhartha was inside.
