aug 21, 1831 - Nat Turner Rebellion
Description:
After murdering his owners, a slave named Nat Turner led a small army of around 75 blacks to the town of Jerusalem, where they planned to raid an arsenal and arm themselves, gaining recruits as they went. They killed around 60 whites before being overwhelmed by state militia forces and armed whites just outside Jerusalem. Whites responded to the insurrection by tightening slave codes to limit the education, movement, and assembly of slaves. Turner's rebellion would be remembered as the most successful slave rebellion in U.S. history. (Continuity: Southern whites treating blacks like animals)
