dec 2, 1823 - Monroe Doctrine Declared

Description:

President James Monroe declares that European nations were obligated to respect the Western Hemisphere as the U.S. sphere of influence, and make no attempts to colonize any part of it. Monroe also declares that the United States will, in turn, stay out of European affairs. The Monroe Doctrine gave a formal definition of U.S. foreign policy and would be adhered to for the next 100 or so years. (Change: foreign policy defined for next 100 years) (Continuity: U.S. attempting to stay out of European affairs when they don't directly involve the U.S.)
