jan 1, 1661 - Virginia Indentured Servant Revolt

Description:

A sizable indentured servant uprising occured in Virginia when a planter named Major Goodwin decided to kepp his servants on a diet of cornbread and water. The leaders of the uprising, Isaac Friend and William Cluton, plotted to get around 40 servants, arm them, and shoot anyone who tried to stop them. The two were tried and ultimately escaped punishment, but one year later a law was passed restraining servants from unlawful meetings. (Effect: stronger indentured servant labor laws)
