jan 1, 1972 - Equal Rights Amendment approved in Congress
Description:
The ERA, which was proposed to secure completely equal rights under law for both genders, passed the House and the Senate in 1972 but failed to be ratified by the necessary number of states upon its passage through Congress. Part of this failure was largely due to the impassioned resistance of Phyllis Schlafly and the STOP ERA movement, which argued for the “dignity” of women as homemakers and that that would be lost upon the passage of the ERA.
