Nine African American students were to attend an all-white school as a demonstration of the enforcement of Brown v. Board. To protect them and to enable them to attend classes, much to the vehement protests of white families (to the point where white mothers pulled their kids out of school), Eisenhower had to send in troops to usher them into school.
