jan 1, 1948 - Executive Order 9981

Description:

In this executive order, Truman called for banning any discrimination based on race, religion, or nationality in the armed forces. This was a considerable expansion of executive power, and one of the first overt government actions to resist post-Civil War racial discrimination. Eventually, this executive order led to the desegregation of the military.
