jan 1, 1867 - Johnson vetoes Tenure of Office Act

Description:

This act was meant to restrict the authority of the president in removing certain federal office members from office (without Congressional approval). Johnson vetoed it, thereby refusing to reduce his executive power. Congress would eventually use this veto and the act as justifications/basis for Johnson’s impeachment.
