James Marshall finds gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. 300,000 people go to California, 24,000 of which were Chinese immigrants seeking fortune. The Chinese are not well-received, as they are viewed as inferiors and discriminated against. Throughout the entirity of the gold rush the Chinese were the targets of violence and discrimination. The legal system favored Americans and did little to prevent this from occurring.
