apr 9, 1917 - Asiatic Barred Zone Act is Passed

Description:

The act draws on the prohibitions of the Chinese exclusion laws and creates an "Asiatic barred zone" from which people are prohibited from immigrating, though the law exempts students and certain professionals and their families. The zone included British India, most of Southeast Asia, and almost all of the Middle East. The law also expands the list of grounds of inadmissibility to include anarchists, previously deported people seeking reentry within a year without special permission, and people over 16 deemed physically capable of reading but are illiterate. (Change: exclusion of more than just Chinese) (Continuity: exclusion of Asians)
