The Know-Nothing Party is a political party formed as a result of a xenophobic reaction to the immense amounts of immigrants coming into the country at the time. The primary reason they disliked immigrants was because they were Catholic (cause), whereas most Americans were Protestant. The two denominations of Christianity had been in conflict for a long time, and the increased presence of it in the United States, and therefore its increased representation in the American political system, alarmed many American Protestants.
