Description:
The Compromise of 1850 dealt with the issue of slavery and how it would expand into the West. When California became a state in 1849 as a free state it tilted the balance of slave states to free states in the Senate. Henry Clay, a senator, brought forth to congress, on January 29, 1850,
the Compromise of 1850 in order to achieve a balance between the states. In this compromise the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and slave trade was abolished in Washington. The act also create two governments one in New Mexico and one in Utah in order to deal with the new land from Mexico. (Overall this Compromise lead to the creation of the states of California, Utah, and New Mexico from the newly acquired lands, and reastablished ballance between slave and free states.)
