jan 1, 1949 - 1949 - After a protracted civil war, the US-supported Nationalists in China were ousted by the Communist party. This was seen as a failure for containment that became an example for many future presidents. Losing the nation of China to communists was an enormous setback that inspired reinvigorated efforts to contain and eradicate communism everywhere else.
