jan 1, 1823 - 1823 - James Monroe and John Quincy Adams' Monroe Doctrine would become the guiding principle for American foreign policy in the Americas for over a century. It declared that the United States was to be a hegemon in the Western Hemisphere and that it would intervene in the affairs of any nation that sought to undermine that hegemony from outside the Western Hemisphere. In practice, it made the United States a policeman for the Americas.
