jan 1, 1912 - 1912 - William Taft declared Nicaragua a United States protectorate solely to protect business interests in the country. In so doing, he sent the US military into the country in the first major use of the Roosevelt Corollary to justify an undeclared invasion of a sovereign country, setting a precedent that would be replicated many times across Latin America in the 20th century.
