jan 1, 1823 - 1823 - The Monroe Doctrine expanded American power over the entirety of the Western Hemisphere. Written by future president John Quincy Adams and declared by President James Monroe, it declared that the United States would be responsible for North and South America, and that it would take action against any European nation found to be encroaching on that sphere of influence.
