Description:
Considered the oldest synagogue in Europe still standing. The rectangular plan is divided into 5 aisles with the central nave aisle being slightly larger than the other four. The interior consists of a series of arcades supported on a network of 24 octagonal piers. The capitals are Mudejar* in style and are derived from classical Corinthian antecedents as well as Byzantine concepts.
*Mudejar is an architectural and decorative style which developed in Spain after the Christian reconquest. It was influenced by Moorish workmanship and patterning.
