Description:
Justinian ruled the Roman Empire of the East from 527 to 565 AD. He reorganized the administration of the imperial government and sponsored a codification of laws known as the "Codex Justinianus". Justinian fought wars in the East against Persia and in the West in order to regain control of Italy. He promoted building on a vast scale. The origins of Byzantine architecture are associated with his cultural and political ambitions. Among other building projects, his principle undertakings were the replacement of the two greatest churches in Constantinople and the development of Ravenna as a capital in the reconquered province of Italy.
