jan 1, 1876 - 1876 - The Battle of Little Bighorn saw General George Custer's 7th cavalry decimated by a force of Sioux Native Americans led by, among others, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This was the single largest defeat for the US military in the wars to take land from Native Americans, and was seen as a humiliating defeat. Despite the defeat, newspapers often painted it in a significantly more positive light than reality would indicate.
