jan 1, 1890 - 1890 - The publication of How the Other Half Lives showed many Americans the livign conditions of immigrants in the tenements of New York City. This inspired many efforts to improve living conditions that ultimately failed, leaving many immigrants no better off than they had been. One such attempt, the design of the dumbell tenement, actually worsened conditions.
