jan 1, 1882 - 1882 - The Chinese Exclusion Act barred all Chinese immigration to the United States. It was the first act which specifically prohibited immigration based solely on the race or ethnic origins of an individual. It was only intended to be temporary, but it was renwed and then made permanent before eventually being removed by the Magnusson Act. It resulted in a massive decline in Chinese immigration to the United States.
