jan 1, 1925 - The Coon
Description:
In the late 1820’s, Thomas Dartmouth Rice developed the stereotype of a comic rustic song and dance figure in form of Jim Crow. This led to a rise of imitators, such as the Zip Coon that stereotypes black males. This caricature was an ignorant black buffoon mimicking the manners of a sophisticated white person. The coon was portrayed as lazy, easily frightened, and inarticulate. He acted childish but was an adult. The caricature was born during American Slavery when slave holders attributed their slaves as having a poor work performance, stupidity, desire for freedom and genetic deficiencies. By the 1900’s the Coon began to be identified with young urban blacks who disrespected whites. The migration from South to North at the turn of the century increased whites fear of job competition. The Coon charecter was way to steroytype blacks as lazy so they would not be hired.
