The story Little Black Sambo was written by Helen Bannerman appearing in England in 1899. The story is about a little black boy who is beautifully dressed, outwits tigers and saves his own life. The next year the story was published in the U.S by Frederick A. Stokes. Sambo was an entertaining story that was ruined by racist pictures and racist names. The illustrations exaggerated black features. Sambo entered America during a period of strained and harsh race relations.
