Many Chinese people spoke out at the start of the Four Modernizations. Many pro-democracy demonstrators met in Tiananmen Square. Students staged hunger strikes and disobeyed government officials. Tanks and Armed Troops started going to Tiananmen Square and shooting at protesters, killing hundreds and wounding thousands. International aid was stopped or cut off. There was one man named “Tank Man” who stood in front of the tanks in an attempt to stop them in a non-violent way.
