The Communist nations of eastern Europe unified themselves in 1955 following challenges from NATO and UN member states in areas such as Korea. This Pact lasted until the dissolution of its foremost member, the Soviet Union, in 1991. Even today Russia opposes NATO in proxy battles in Syria and on Russia's frontiers in Crimea.
