In response to the antisemitism that surrounded him in late 19th century Austria, Theodor Herzl founded an idea called Zionism. It called for the foundation of a protected state where Jews could take refuge from a world that didn't respect rights. Following WWII, British Palestine was partitioned into the nation of Israel. The lack of regard the British showed for the boundaries of cultural groups currently living in that region betrayed the removed nature of European Imperialism in what was the throes of its existence. This was also a response to the horrors of the Holocaust. Israel still affects the political and cultural struggles in the Middle East as Palestinians fight against Israeli settlement and encroachment.Added to timeline:
