may 14, 1955 - Creation of Warsaw Pact
Description:
In response to West Germany joining NATO, the Soviet Union formed its own military alliance with 7 other Eastern European countries (including East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia). While it was created to defend against military attacks, there was also a use in keeping control over countries within the Soviet sphere of influence. During the Czechoslovakian and Hungarian revolts, it was Warsaw Pact troops that were sent to put them down.
