apr 4, 1949 - Formation of NATO
Description:
With the growing threat of the USSR right on Western Europe's borders, there was a large fear of a Soviet attack. To combat this, 12 western nations (including the U.S., France, and Great Britain) formed NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), a military alliance that protected all member nations from a Soviet military attack. NATO was one of the primary factors keeping the Cold War cold, as it provided a bulwark against the Soviet threat.
