aug 14, 1975 - Helsinki Accords

Description:

The Helsinki Accords were a group of agreements that were nonbinding and signed by most European nations, as well as the US and Canada. They stated that the boundaries agreed upon by post ww2 treaties were to be respected by all nations. They also stated that countries who signed should cooperate to avoid human rights abuses and protect the freedoms of all citizens. Later, the Soviet crackdowns on Eastern European nations for revolutionary behavior in the 1980's would prompt Western European nations to accuse the Soviets of betraying the agreements made in the accords.
