apr 5, 1961 - Construction of the Berlin Wall

Description:

In 1961, an inexperienced Kennedy made the crucial error of admitting that the US would not be opposed to a physical barrier around West Berlin. Almost immediately, Soviet troops surrounded the city and began preparations for a wall, restricting all inbound and outbound traffic by tearing up streets and laying barbed wire. The wall was being continuously added to between 1961 and 1975, it stared with some sections of concrete and long lengths of barbed wire fencing. In the next few years, more barbed wire and towers would be added, followed by an improved concrete slab wall which finished construction in 1975.
