nov 1, 1962 - Cuban Missile Crisis
Description:
The Soviet Union had secretly transported nuclear warheads to Cuba following the US setting up missiles in Turkey. Kennedy found out and ordered a blockade around Cuba to prevent Soviet ships from sending further supplies. Khrushchev demanded that Kennedy remove the blockade, but Kennedy refused. Eventually an agreement was made, requiring that the Soviet Union remove their missiles for Cuba in exchange for the US removing their missiles from Turkey, removing the blockade, and promising not to interfere further in Cuba. It is commonly considered the closest to nuclear war the world has ever been, as well as the height of US-Soviet tensions.
