jan 18, 1932 - Holodomor

Description:

Often called "extermination by hunger", Holodomor was the artificial famine imposed by Stalin in Soviet Ukraine, leading the the starvation of an estimated 1.8-5 million people. Joseph Stalin came into power and forced peasants and farmers to join collective farms under the control of the USSR. They were also required to give up their land to the Soviet government. Due to resistance, thousands of Ukrainians were deported to Siberia where most of them were killed. Eventually, the Soviets increased the quota up to 44%, which lead to food shortages and starvation. Any who tried to keep food to themselves, no matter how little, were arrested or executed. The nation-wide famine spiraled deeper and deeper into chaos as military blockades situated around the borders prevented any form of aid from reaching the suffering.
