The walls were not made for defense and did not use mortar to be binded together. They were made from locally hewn granite that had no military function. Many parts of the walls had gaps and interrupted arcs or elements. The Great Enclosure of Zimbabwe was completed in 1450 and it is speculated that it was made to accommodate a surplus population and its religious rituals/council meetings.
