On May 26, 1940 the remaining half of French troops were evacuated by the British off the beaches of Dunkirk which resulted in an ultimate win for the Allies. An estimated 400,000 troops were evacuated by navy and civilian ships. If the Allies had lost those troops they would not stand a chance against Hitler, and letting them go was a key mistake that leads to Hitler's downfall.
