jan 15, 1944 - Bruno and Shmuel die together
Description:
Bruno goes to where Shmuel and Bruno meet after Herr Liszt had left. Bruno is given the striped suit by Shmuel and he accidentally smells it as he changes into it, is smells horrible, like it had neer been washed before. Bruno leaves his other clothing behind on the ground. Shmuel is shocked at how similiar Bruno looks to the boys on his side of the fence, just fatter and not as pale. Shmuel lifts the fence just high enough for Bruno to roll through.
Bruno and Shmuel wanted to give each other hugs but were too shy to do so. bruno had imagined that there would be happy families and children playing games, but to Bruno's surprise there was none of that, neither were there any fruits or vegitables. Instead he saw groups of people looking very sad, staring at the ground. All of them were extremely malnutritioned and had shaved heads.
everywhere bruno looked, he saw happy, laughing soldiers and unhappy, crying people in striped pyjamas.
bruno didn't like it here. The two boys spent an hour and half searching for evidence of Shmuels papa.
Bruno was about to go back home without finding any evidence and haf asked Shmuel to walk him back to the fence when there was a sudden whistle and 10 soldiers. The soldiers force people to go on 'marches' right where Bruno and Shmuel were standing. Bruno was confused and did as Bruno said. There was second whistle and the group of 100 people started to march together slowly. Shmuel and Bruno were in the centre and hey were getting pushed along as the crowd moved. Some people didn't want to go and where shot near the back of the group.
It was raining and Bruno was just being carried along with the movement of the crowd. They go down a set of stais and the raining stops, they are all filling this long hall/room. Bruno says to Shmuel that it was unfortunate that they couldn't find his papa, he says that Shmuel is his best friend. Shmuel and Bruno hold each others' hands tightly, not letting go. Everyone in the room took a gasp of air when Shmuel was going to respond but doesn't hear him. The meal door closes. The room goes dark, but Bruno and shmuel don't let go.
Bruno and Shmuel are gassed and die together.
