-it is believed that in 1407 Donatello and Brunelleschi became friends and traveled to Rome to study classical art.
-His association with Brunelleschi most likely influenced him in the gothic style that we see in Donatello’s early work.


-In 1408 he created David in Florence.
-Gothic style, long lines, and expressionless face.
-Very well executed but lacks the emotion we see in his later work.

-Was commissioned by the family of Erasmo da Narni who had recently died.
-was the first equestrian statue in bronze since the Romans.
-Caused controversy because equestrian statues were historically reserved for kings.

-In 1455 he Returned to Florence and completed Magdalene Penitent.
-Intended to provide comfort to repentant prostitutes at the Convent of Santa Maria di Cestello.
-His lifelong friendship with Medici family secured his retirement.

-He died Dececmber 13, 1466 in Florence
