Ashoka, the third ruler of the Indian Mauryan Empire, converted to Buddhism after witnessing the horrors of his conquest of Kalinga. He advocated for morality, nonviolence, moderation, and religious tolerance in the government and in private. Despite his beliefs, Ashoka was also committed to punishing those who deserved it.
