jan 1, 1958 - The Great Leap Foward
Description:
The Great Leap Foward was the second Five-Year Plan. China wanted to make the industrial output as good as the West had it. Modern machinery was bought and ran almost all the time. This created many huge farms called people’s communes. People set unrealistic goals for how much they would be able to grow. Steel that was made was and very good. Parents worked long hours and children were put in nurseries. People didn’t grow enough wheat for themselves and the amount they were giving up. The Great Leap was an utter failure as industrial output decrease and they had many food shortages and famine. One lasted for around 3 years, causing 20-30 million people to die from starvation.
