Description:
The strategic arms limitation talks were the most serious formal talks between the two superpowers during the cold war.
A number of treaties were signed including a ban on new ballistic missile launchers as well as limitations on defence systems being built and a number of principles with a policy of non-interference and economic, scientific and cultural ties.
The leaders were had seen the cold war at its most tense and did not want that to return and so they continued to build on the SALT I achievements and began talks on SALT II.
