mar 13, 1919 - Treaty of Versailles

Description:

The Treaty of Versailles officially put an end to World War I, or The Great War. While it was a short term solution to the conflict, it set in play the events which would give way to World War II. The treaty put in place harsh reparations to punish Germany for its role in the war. However, when the already war torn economies of Europe suffered the Great depression, the payments became too high to pay back and led to the rise of extremism in Germany. The treaty also set up the League of Nations, which, while somewhat effective in resolving small disputes, in the end was not able to accomplish its goal of lasting peace.
