nov 4, 1956 - Operation Whirlwind
Description:
Khrushchev had allowed Hungary limited freedoms in order to align himself with peaceful coexistence but there was much pressure on him from pro-Stalin figures in Moscow and at the head of many Eastern Bloc countries. He had tried to keep Hungary under its sphere of controlled communism but the declaration of independence was the last straw - a threat to communism, the Eastern Bloc and the USSR itself!
Operation Whirlwind was the Red Army invasion of Hungary and Budapest against which the rebels didn't stand a chance.
Under Kadar (USSR loyal), the communists once again took control; leaders (including Nagy) were executed and 200,000 refugees fled across a quickly closed Austrian border.
There was almost universal condemnation of the USSR's actions by the UN meeting on the same day but all action to be taken was vetoed by the USSR and the Suez Canal crisis was of more critical concern.
Despite the Truman Doctrine, Eisenhower refused to take action behind the iron curtain - which many in the USA and Hungary believed to be a betrayal.
