After the secret speech, Poland had been allowed minor reforms after student protests and so Hungarian students wanted to seize the moment to gain greater independence.
Demanding greater freedoms, the removcal of Rakosi and the return of recently exiled Imre Nagy (a reform supporting politician). Further, they called for the removal of Soviet troops from the country.
The protests quickly grew and violence broke out as Hungarian troops sent in sided with protesters and the secret police (AVH) opened fire on crowds.
