jul 10, 1956 - First Series of
U2 flights end
Description:
The first series of U2 flights started 20/6 and flew over Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
Contrary to the CIA's expectations, the current soviet radar had been able to detect but not track the flights (which the american systems couldn't) and so they knew flights had taken place but not that they had gone over Moscow and Leningrad. The first series of flights was ended when Khrushchev complained of sustained flights in soviet airspace (showing the new ability to track U2 flights).
This prompted the CIA to initiate Project Rainbow to make U2 planes undetectable.
However, none of the 8 flights into the Eastern Bloc had shown the feared Bison Bombers to be at any of the bases they visited and so this dispelled the bomber gap myth from the Eisenhower administration but put in fears of a missile gap.
