Grace is encouraged by her father to pause her studies on the presence of ether in light and sound to come home to London. In London, she is forced to go to the Foreign Office Ball, and her father has arranged for her to meet Francis Franshaw, a well-known government worker. He does this in hopes for a future marriage between them to occur, in which she can move back to London and possibly continue her studies in her Aunt's house.
