apr 12, 1861 - Ft. Sumter
Description:
The American civil war is officially started when the confederates fired on fort Sumter on Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. After South Carolina seceded they demanded that the fort be turned over to the confederates, but the union refused. For thirty-three hours, they shot 4,000 shells in the direction of the fort. Finally, the unions soldiers raised the white flag. No one on either side had been killed, although two Union soldiers died when the departing soldiers fired a gun salute, and some cartridges exploded. It was a nearly bloodless beginning to America’s bloodiest war.
