jan 1, 1909 - NAACP founded
Description:
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded by W.E.B. DuBois, a black civil rights leader. DuBois believed, contrary to Booker T. Washington, that civil rights (political and legal) should be their first priority and that economic independence could only come after civil rights had been obtained. DuBois also believed in the "talented tenth" (that people should promote the black intellectual/artistic elite) and in double-consciousness (African-American and Pan-Africanism). NAACP was formed as a bi-racial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans.
