Description: Lincoln was a republican candidate who opposed the expansion of slavery into the territories. This idea was clearly expressed in his Lincoln-Douglas debates. The South however took this idea as he did not support slavery. During this election the South did not support Lincoln they supported other candidates such as Douglas, Breckinridge, and John Bell. Lincoln won the electoral vote with 40% but did not win the popular vote. The South immediately threatened to succeed which Lincoln thought it was unconstitutional.
