may 11, 71 BC - East Wilderness

Description:

This is a somewhat unique episode in the history of the Nephites.

Now, the Land of Zarahemla had, for a long time, been nearly surrounded by wilderness on both the east and the west, which wilderness was filled with Lamanites who were of the most ferocious type. They dwelt in tents and lived by raiding and plundering the Nephites.
There are no details given of these raids, but the little information given clearly shows that it had been a fairly constant annoyance to the Nephites, at least from the time that King Limhi and Alma the Elder had joined the Nephties, or about 50 years.

Now, Moroni organized his armies and marched into the east wilderness and actively drove the Lamanites from this area. It is the only account of Moroni going on the offensive and conquering lands that had, historically, belong to the Lamanites. He cleared the entire region.
Now, he also sent armies to clear the west wilderness, but this is mentioned in a much briefer account.
