Around the late-1600's, the E.I.T.C. was given permission to make a permanent settlement in Bengal, India , coincidentally enough called the Permanent Settlement. Towards 1755 the E.I.T.C. hired Robert Clive to help govern Fort St. David at Cuddalore. Then Clive headed to his post at Fort St. David. Eventually all this resulted in British merchant control of Bengal and the surrounding area.
