jan 1, 1945 - Yalta Conference
Description:
Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt met in Yalta to plan the final defeat and occupation of Nazi Germany
Roosevelt agreed to allow Soviet influence in Eastern Europe after the war, so long as Soviets allowed free elections in those countries. The SU believed it earned this right (23 million Soviet casualties).
- Eastern Europe; Churchill and Roosevelt agreed that Poland and its neighbors would fall under Soviet influence but called for “free and unfettered” elections → meant that elected leaders had to consent to Soviet dominations
- Stalin messed with Poland (free elections not possible)
- Set up the eastern European plan
- Truman decided to take a stand against Stalin for his failure to honor Yalta agreements
- Made people think poorly of soviet stuff rather than just Stalin
- Germany’s future undecided; all they knew was that it would have to pay reparations
